Knights of Anneal

Exploring a fictional MMO game. Written by someone who has never played an MMO.

Day 1, life 1, starting in Knights of Anneal.

Character creation was fast: I've got this helmet, I've got a red tunic (because I expect to die a lot), and that's all the choices there were.

Here I am. [TODO images]

I've spawned in a forest. My map is entirely fog of war so I don't know which one. I could probably figure it out from walkthoughs but I'd rather experience the game first hand.

I see a glowing plant! Maybe it's a magic herb; it certainly looks pickable. Get. Yes, I have one "Febrile Aid" and there's still more in this patch. Get.

A fairy pops up from the herbs holding her hand out to halt me. [TODO images] "Don't pick anymore now, it needs time to grow," she says. Hrrrmm, I want more glowing herb. I'll get this now and see if gardening is an option later. Get.

The fairy has cursed me and I've turned into a sapling and I'm dead. 🪦 [TODO images]

When spawning a new life, players are dropped into a completely random section of the game. This may put them into a dangerous situation. Many players die several times before landing in a safer area. Others relish the challenge of dodging lava flows at level 1.
Death effects can add long-term elements to the game. That sapling Hana turned into is a real tree in the game now and will grow bigger over time.

* while char is at level 1, they meet another player (also level 1, you can tell by the solid-colored tunic) who they team up with and are following to some destination; the other player jumps across a chasm, our char tries to follow and can't jump far enough; as they fall to their next death they realize that higher level characters can jump farther - that's not a level 1 char they just chose to keep their solid-colored tunic, and you've been led into a trap, yep here come the looters for your corpse. dead again.
* when char is higher level (after lots of hard work), they could choose to sacrifice their progress by getting a fairy to turn them into a tree (bigger and more powerful at that level) in order to save an NPC dryad whose forest has been destroyed
